Stunning coffee table book that tells the story of the world’s newest dark sky sanctuary, Great Barrier Island
This book tells the story of the unique off-the-grid life on an offshore island and the 'discovery' of the consequent pristine night skies by Auckland astronomers.
Published as a coffee table book to commemorate the accreditation of Aotea/Great Barrier Island as an International Dark Sky Sanctuary by IDA, it describes the island (including history, flora and fauna, geography and geology), how its darkness was scientifically measured and the implication of the accreditation (such as the need for lighting controls and the potential for astrotourism).
The book is brought to life by numerous colour photographs. Complete with a map of the dark sky locations, it is a perfect companion for astrotourists and anyone interested in the islands of the Hauraki Gulf.
All proceeds go to the island's charitable trust, Destination Great Barrier Island.
